THE ART DIRECTOR/PRODUCTION DESIGNER

A Production designer is responsible for the overall look of the scenery within a film. We also accurately estimate the cost of the work within a budget and schedule. A team of specialist crew build the set, hire or buy the props, graphics, special effects and everything else required under the supervision of the designer to achieve the desired look of the film.

In some instances (usually smaller jobs) the term "set designer" or "art director" is applied instead of production designer. A considerable knowledge and experience in film and set design is required to respond with practical solutions to fulfil the set design brief and communicate with the director, clients and specialist crew.

Drawing skills (technical and visual) though not mandatory are helpful together with knowledge of construction methods. Research and meticulous preparation are essential requiring us to be involved very early in the production process. We generally work on a freelance basis and are selected by the director or producer.
